Original Jody Broun Painting. HUGE! “Stories About Country” Awarded Australian Artist. Gallery Art.
$ 92.27
Description This work by Jody Broun titled “Stories About Country” has had a very interesting life. It was purchased by an Australian diplomat in 2002 at the Melbourne Art Fair that’s held annually at the Victorian exhibition hall in the exhibition gardens, from Dianne Mossenson’s Indigenart Gallery in Subiaco, Perth. The current owner didn’t have a lot of money at the time but she couldn’t stop looking at the work. It spoke to her so fundamentally about her country and the lives of the First Nations peoples in it. She went out into the gardens several times and told herself all the reasons why she couldn’t afford to buy it. Eventually she used her rent to put down a deposit, then had to sell her only parcel of shares to pay for it. In the intervening 20 years the work has hung in Australian diplomatic residences across the globe, where it has been the perfect vehicle to start discussions about the lives of First Nations people’s in Australia and inform foreign diplomats and guests of how proud we are as a nation to live side by side with the oldest living culture in the world. It has also sparked conversations about sovereignty, human rights and decency, the frontier wars and reconciliation, truth-telling, and reparation. This was particularly so when the painting was hung in Cape Town, South Africa during that country’s truth and reconciliation process. The current owners deeply love this painting but are now retired, relocated to a small house, and in need of funds so they are reluctantly offering it to a new custodian where it’s accumulation of stories will continue to live on. The artist has been informed of the potential sale and will receive 10% of the sale proceeds. The work is Acrylic on Canvas, stretched over a frame, and marked on the reverse with the title by the gallery. A copy of the original receipt is also available for the buyer. Broun’s works hold their value and are excellent from an investment perspective. Very few come onto the secondary market. At the time of writing this is the only Broun currently piece for sale. This painting is HUGE and has a commanding presence. I love the flow of the piece- the circular motion where there seems to be no beginning and no end- much like the story of Indigenous Australians with this Great Land. The striking colours that represent the Australian outback tell further story and inject vibrance and even more energy into this expressive piece. Broun’s use of contrasting colours intrigues- her talent in captivating the eye of the beholder is obvious with this extraordinary work. We’re keen to find the next person who this work talks to. Colonialism also features prominently in her works. These themes are depicted using contrasting vibrant colours to portray the community life of the Indigenous people of outback Australia, representing the red earth of the outback and the strikingly clear blue sky, along with a unique fish eye lens aerial perspective, as demonstrated in this work. Broun depicts the Western Desert styled painting using an aerial perspective her artworks are painted on large canvases with the use of acrylic paints. 1123
